» Workshop – Weekends in Leipzig
06. – 08.09. and 25. – 27.10.2019

An introductory session on Friday is open for all levels and an interested audience. It will focus on the specific musical features of different cultural regions such as Maqam, Central African Singing of Pygmae and Balkan Gypsy Music. On Saturday and Sunday amateur and professional musicians of all genres are invited to learn more about the choosen musical aspects. On Sunday afternoon all groups come together to share the music they learned the days before. The open stage, where you can present your music, is on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday night before the Workshop Weekends (donation from the audience is yours).

  • Christos Barbas (music from Greek and Turkey)

    Christos Barbas focuses mainly on woodwind instruments, but expresses his music also with piano and singing. He studied traditional, classical and spiritual music traditions from around the world and is a composer as well. As of 2000 he began studies on the Ney (middle-eastern reed flute) and Sufi and Ottoman Classical music learning from outstanding masters from Greece and Turkey.
    In this workshop we will explore the roots and styles of Mediterranean Music. Microtonal scales and makams will be introduced as well as being the base for improvisation. The workshop is aimed at people of different musical backgrounds, who share a curiosity for turkish and greek traditional music. Singers and instrumentalists are welcome.

  • Njamy Sitson (Polyphonic Singing)

    With a melodious voice, Njamy explores world music through his Cameroonian roots, also showing a familiarity with European Classical Music and Jazz with his strong array of diverse instrumental talents such as: Ngoni, Kalimba, Congas, Udu, Loop and Ndewhoo (Pygmy Flute). Being also an actor and storyteller, he teaches African music at his “Njamy School of African Singing” in Augsburg and at the Freies Musikzentrum in Munich, and leads singing workshops for choirs and classical orchestras throughout Europe.
    The workshop appeals to people of different musical backgrounds with the desire to express themselves with music, true to its motto of life: music for an inter-cultural dialogue! Main subject is the Central African Polyphonic singing of Pygmae.

  • Ira Shiran (Balkan Ornamentations)

    Ira demonstrates a strong resonance with Balkan and Gypsy-Balkan music with his love of playing the accordion. In his efforts to master this demanding style, Ira had visited the Balkan countries and attended lessons and workshops led by some of the genre’s finest. Ira has performed in many orchestras and composed songs for accordions. Writing arrangements for theaters and orchestras, he also feels comfortable with playing in small bars in Berlin.

    The workshop will focus on Balkan Music and its ornamentations. We will work on traditional song-material from different regions to understand their specialities and differences. We will learn ideas and guidelines for improvisation in the different Styles. Open for intermediate and advanced instrumentalists.

  • Zohar Fresco (Percussion Compositions)

    As one of the most sought-after percussionists, Zohar inspires virtuoso through playing on the frame drum. Influenced by Arabic, Indian, Turkish and Persian music, he has developed his own techniques and has become a mentor to many musicians from all over the world.

    In the introductory session on Friday, Zohar will speak about his own compositions and explain the arrangement and the underlying ideas in detail. On Saturday and Sunday advanced percussionists and instrumentalists are invited to work on different compositions using Zohar’s approach to rhythm.

  • » Workshop on Carnatic Music in Leipzig
    28.09. – 01.10.2019

    Due to the lack of funding we reduced the Workshop week to a course with focus on Carnatic Music. All courses are open for interested singers and instrumentalists. The morning session will be more of introductory character. The afernoon session will go into details.

  • BC Manjunath (Carnatic Music and Konnakol)

    As a sensitive musician deeply into Indian Classical, World Music, Jazz, Fusion and many more styles, he conducts well received workshops worldwide. The focus of this workshop is on Konnakol – percussive syllables that mimic the South Indian “Mridangam”. Besides being the basis for learning this drum, many musicians have found it a helpful tool to master, internalize and to really understand complex rhythmical structures. Watching Manjunath’s thrilling performances of Konnakol you immediately can feel the groove that is pulsing constantly inside him.

    Manjunath will be teaching Konnakol aiming at percussionist and all instrumentalists who are interested in expanding their rhythmical knowledge. Insights into carnatic music and complex rhythmical structures will be subject of the workshops.

  • Varijashree Venugopal (Carnatic Music, Singing and Konnakol)

    Her style contrasts between Carnatic Music of South Indian origin and jazz. She is the pioneering artist of the style “Carnatic Scat Singing”. She is not afraid to cross the boundaries of her education and tradition, forming part of the Bangalore-based fusion band “Chakrafonics”, where she has raised attention with her virtuous and personal singing style.

    Varijashree has traveled a long way to share her music, rich in tradition, expanded by joy in experimentation and a true feeling of jazz. The participants benefit from her broad experience, stage presence and deep rhythmical knowledge. The workshop aims at singers and flutists who want to get insights into South Indian Carnatic music.
